BIG STORIES, SMALL TOWNS is a multi-platform web documentary project from Australia gathering heart warming local stories from rural towns for a global audience http://bigstories.com.au.

With multiple awards and recognition from international film festivals such as South by Southwest (SXSW) and International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), this is the first time BIG STORIES has been brought to Malaysia.

We brought the filmmaker, Nadira Ilana to share her experiences of being the first Malaysian to be given the opportunity to work with Big Stories on this project.  The Sabahan filmmaker’s previous films include the Freedom Film Fest 2013 winning documentary, The Silent Riot and Lastik: Once Upon a Time in the East, a short film for the Astro My Hometown series.

This multi-platform web documentary project was helmed in Malaysia by Nadira Ilana. Extremely passionate about being a voice and platform to keep the traditions of her own cultural heritage alive, she spent a year in Sabah collaborating with locals to create a series of short documentaries and photographs. Empowering indigenous communities to tell their own stories and share them with the world.

Series producer, Martin Potter is also a guest at this session. He is an acclaimed documentary maker, artist and academic working across disciplines. His core interest is in working with communities to produce creative works central to their lives and relevant to the world that can facilitate profound communal transformation. He founded Plexus Films in 1998, now Closer Productions, and was creative director and producer until 2006 when he sold the company. He was Head of Production, Programs and Development at the Media Resource Centre from 2006 – 09 overseeing more than 300 productions including feature films, broadcast documentaries and online programs.
